AU PARTNER TOOLKIT | DEVELOP YOUR ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION ACTION PLAN

STEP 3: DEVELOP YOUR ACTION PLAN

The primary goal of this toolkit it to help you develop an Active Transportation Action Plan, which is a written document your community can use to apply for funding to support active travel projects.  Your action plan can focus on a corridor, a neighborhood, an area of your community, or the entire community.  Action plans have specific requirements, and this step of the toolkit provides four key activities that will ensure you address them.

In the 3rd Step of the PARTNER Toolkit you will...
  • Summarize everything you’ve learned about your community (and from your community members) into a set of goals you’d like to achieve.  The toolkit provides a resource to help you articulate these goals so you can share them with others.

  • Select specific action items to pursue to accomplish these goals.  There are many potential action items your community can take, from changes in roadway design to downtown revitalization to civic programming.  The toolkit provides a resource to help you understand what action items you could consider in pursuit of your specific goals, including the effort and partners involved.

  • Work with your community members to prioritize action items.  The best way to get started improving active transportation in your community is by focusing on one project at a time, starting with the one the most people are excited about.  There are many ways you might determine this, but the toolkit provides a resource on one consensus-building process you might consider.

  • Compile your action items in the action plan.  A well-crafted action plan tells a compelling story about your community, your goals, and your plans to achieve them.  This action plan is critical because it verifies your community used a thoughtful and consensus-building approach to develop your steps forward.  The toolkit is especially important when you want to apply for funding, as transportation agencies prioritize projects based on objective, well-documented data – not personal opinions or assumptions.  The toolkit provides a complete Action Plan Template to help guide you in writing this document.
